Informal Justice: Rule of Law and Dispute Resolution in Palestine

The Institute of Law at Birzeit University established a Law and Society Department as part of the ongoing efforts to reflect on the development of law in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. One of the prerequisites for an effective legal system is the existence of a community of legal scholars not only with expertise and technical skills but also with the capacity to reflect on the development of law from a variety of perspective and its relation to society.
This field of research and approach is very innovative and of particular importance in the Palestinian context. In the Palestinian academic arena, an interdisciplinary approach to legal issues is lacking. The team members of this department are composed from researchers from different backgrounds to ensure the multi-disciplinary aspect of the elaborated research themes.

The research on the informal justice system dealt with an important subject and fills a gap in research as there has been no major study on the interplay between customs and law in contemporary Palestine.
